We met in our first year of study at the University of Guelph. We met as floor-mates in residence.
One weekend in the fall of our second year, Jeff went home to Markham (to have his laundry done by his mother, though he won’t admit to that). He found himself watching David Letterman one night. The Presidents of the United States of America were on, one of Jeff’s fav bands at the time. They played their song ‘Lump.’ As he sat on the couch listening, the lyrics sunk in, “she’s lump, she’s lump, she’s in my head.” At that very moment it hit him! ‘Patti. She’s Lump. She’s in my head…I’m in love with her!’ I guess I had been on his mind all the time, but he didn’t realize until then what that meant. Listening to the song it sunk in and he admitted to himself that he was in love with me. At least that’s how Jeff explains the story.
Now, if you listen to the whole of the song, it’s no compliment to be Lump, that’s for sure. But, it is a pretty endearing story. That moment of realization changed the course of our futures. I guess I’m grateful to the Presidents for their song and that airing of Letterman. I’m not sure when Jeff would have woken to an understanding of his feelings if it hadn’t been then.
You’ll have to wait until next week to hear how this story continues. Part 2, the moment when Jeff confessed his feelings to me. Until then, have a wonderful week.
